Planting Seeds

Before planting a Kindness Rocks Garden at Unity Village, Unity Arts Ministry planted seeds of kindness at a local elementary school through rock art. We pledged to link up with the mission of The Kindness Rocks Project (TM) and bring a hand painted rock to every student at Hazel Grove Elementary School during "Random Acts of Kindness Week," 2018.

The catalyst behind our bold initiative came from one of Unity Arts Ministry's core team members, Shannon Sleeper. After hearing of a tragedy, Shannon choose to respond by creating more kindness and compassion in the world.

“One morning in October of 2017, I learned of the mass shooting in Las Vegas through the Facebook page ‘Cultivate Kindness: The ReesSpecht Life Foundation.’ Before I knew any details of the tragedy that had unfolded, I heard someone challenging me/us to respond to this tragedy differently - to use it as an opportunity to change the pattern with kindness. I had already learned of the Kindness Rocks Project(TM) but came up with the plan to introduce my son's school to the project."

In total we collected over 500 messages of hope and inspiration from participating organizations and individuals. Students were encouraged to place their rocks respectfully in the community to spread the message of kindness and compassion. Both students and teachers were inspired by the ripple of kindness they have already created.

Growing a Garden

Following the success of our initial Kindness Rocks event at Hazel Grove Elementary, Unity Arts Ministry proposed the installation of a Kindness Rocks Garden on grounds at Unity Village, MO. Since the inception of the Kindness Rocks Garden at Unity Village in 2018, Unity Arts Ministry has hosted numerous “Rock Painting Parties” to introduce communities to the Kindness Rocks Project and to help keep our garden stocked.

The Kindness Rocks Garden is now maintained by a volunteer team from within the Unity Arts Ministry community. Each rock gardener helps to paint new rocks for our garden and ensures it is well stocked for visitors. Our goal is to continue to spread the ripple of kindness to all who visit this sacred site at Unity Village.

We are grateful to our amazing team of volunteer rock gardeners and to all who share inspiration through their rock art placed in our garden. Thank you!

Master Gardener

The Kindness Rocks Project(TM) was created by Megan Murphy of Cape Cod, MA in hopes of sparking joy in people’s everyday lives. She began by writing inspiring messages on rocks and leaving them at a beach where she walked every day. What started as 5 rocks rippled out and spread kindness to her community.
